Q: I have taught school with the same school system for seven years. This past July, my husband quit his job and opened up his own business. Since then, I got health insurance through my school system for my husband, my step-daughter, and myself. I am currently 10 weeks pregnant. I do not wanting to go back to work once the baby is born in September. Will my pregnancy and the birth of my baby be covered under COBRA? Also, will my husband and step-daughter be able to be covered, or will they need to get their own health insurance policy? Please let me know what I need to do.
A; COBRA is a continuation of your employer’s group health plan. You will have the same benefits, same coverages as before the qualifying event. As long as you have pregnancy and maternity coverage now, it will continue through COBRA. You will be able to add the baby to your COBRA. If your husband and step-daughter have your employer’s group health insurance, they will also be able to have COBRA continuation coverage. They maximum amount of time you and your family can keep COBRA is 18 months. It is your employer's responsibility to provide you with the COBRA paperwork.
