Q: Upon leaving my job in June of 2007, I had a verbal discussion with my boss regarding COBRA. I told him that would only need COBRA for 2 months (July and August 2007) as my new insurance would begin in Sept. 2007. I then left his employ. A few weeks later he mailed me the Cobra paperwork. I filled it out accordingly and mailed to all the appropriate people. I never received a single piece of paper or bill from Cobra or my ex-boss. Recently, I received a phone call followed by copies of bills from my ex-boss stating I owe him over $1,500.00 when 2 months of coverage (July and Aug. 07) would be less than $800.00 which I have no problem paying. Who is responsible for the balance? And, why would I have double coverage (Cobra and Blue Cross/Blue Shield) for the months beyond August 07?
A: If you elected COBRA for July and August, you are responsible for paying the premiums to your previous employer or their COBRA plan administrator. As long as you can provide written proof that you had other health insurance coverage after August, you will not be responsible for paying any additional COBRA payments. If your employer paid the COBRA premiums for September and beyond, the insurance company will re-imburse him when he provides them the proof of your other coverage.
