Q:  I am retiring at age 63 and will go on Cobra until Medicare at age 65. I will need 21 months of coverage. My company is telling me they can put me on Cobra for the 21 months but everything I read says 18 months is all that I can do. Can the company authorize 21 months of Cobra?

A:  COBRA is a federal law that gives an employee the right  to continue their employer’s group health plan for up to 18 months when a qualifying event occurs. Your employer could be referring to a Mini-COBRA which is a state specific continuation plan that might allow you to have COBRA longer than 18 months.  Eligibility requirements and rules can vary by state. To find out if your state offers a mini-COBRA you can go www.naic.org .
