Q: I am going on 63 years of age. I am currently employed but I am considering semi-retirement at the end of this year, if I can still get insurance coverage. I am an insulin dependent diabetic and I have been since 1981. I have tried to see if I could get coverage with other ins. companies but so for I cannot because I am a diabetic. Could I possibly get insuance coverage with COBRA? Thanks for your help and answers. Richard
A: When you leave your job, even if it is because of early retirement, you would be qualifed for a continuation of the group health plan that you were on. You would have the ability to elect COBRA for up to a maximum of 18 months. The medical conditions that you have will be covered under the COBRA law if they were covered by your policy prior to the termination. If you are eligible for Medicare, you will no longer be eligible for COBRA.
