Q: My husband went on Medicare Dec 2006. He is now working but if he retires from his job on June 1, 2008, how long can I, as his spouse, (I am 61) stay on COBRA? And, can he continue his supplement and prescription card on COBRA, or would he have to buy separate supplement insurance and Part D?

A:  The spouse of an employee is entitled to Medicare can have COBRA for a maximum of 36 months.

Once an employee starts receiving Medicare benefits, they no longer qualify for COBRA continuation.  Your husband would have to purchase a Medicare supplement because he is not entitled to COBRA.  For more information about Medicare and Medicare supplements  go to www.medicare.gov  .
