Q: I had left my previous employer in mid March! I am 9 months pregnant and went for a prenatal appt. today and was told that I was inactive. They will not see me any longer until I have proof of coverage. How can I get some kind of proof that I will have COBRA during the next few weeks of pregnancy and that they can see me! I worried that I won’t get the proper attention b/c of being “inactive”.
A:If the employer that you just left has more than 20 employees, they have to offer you COBRA. It is a continuation of the same benefits you had before. The employer or their COBRA plan administrator is required to provide you with the COBRA paperwork. Hopefully, the plan administrator they have will allow you to sign up by phone or online which speeds the process up. Once you elect COBRA the insurance is retro-active so you do not have a lapse in coverage. While you are waiting for the paper work; you will not have "proof" of insurance. I suggest that you talk with your doctor's office and medical facility to make arrangements so you could still see the doctor during the COBRA election period. They can re-submit the claims or if you pay out of pocket you will be reimbursed once the paperwork has been processed.
