Q:  I am currently an insured teacher and going on strike next week. I have insurance coverage until 4/21/2008. I am also due to give birth on May 15th. If I need to COBRA my insurance will it go through in time? Also, does striking count as gross misconduct?

A:
You would be eligible for COBRA if you lose your group benefits because you go on strike.  The employer or their plan administrator has up to 45 days to mail you the COBRA paperwork from your last day of benefits.  Hopefully, the plan administrator may allow you to sign up online or by phone. Once, you elect COBRA the insurance is retro-active and you will not have a lapse in coverage.
