Q:  My family recently moved to AZ (from CA) where they do not have providers that will accept our insurance.  Do to my husbands medication needs and my previous upper GI Bleed we are considered high risk and have to keep the Employer COBRA Insurance, So How do I do this when there is no coverage in Arizona?? We also have a 3 year old and 3 month old. Can I make a well baby appointment for my 3 month old and where do I go?

A: If the previous employer gives their employees the option to choose from several health plans, then they have to offer you a plan that you can use in Arizona when you elect COBRA. If Kaiser is the only plan available through the employer, you are right you won't have any coverage in Arizona; you would have to go back to CA for treatment. However, you may want to check with them to see what benefits they will pay in the event of an emergency.

You will need to keep Creditable Coverage, so a new employer will not put limitations on pre-existing conditions.  We have an Alternative COBRA plan that is creditable coverage and will cover you for any new or unexpected illnesses and injuries. This plan usually costs a fraction of what the COBRA rates are through your employer. You have the freedom to choose your own doctors and medical facilities. Click Here for more information.
