I am retiring at 64 1/2 at the end of this month and my spouse is 62 1/2. Her work does not provide health insurance. Thus, we plan on electing COBRA coverage for the both of us. I would like the coverage for 6 months until I can elect Medicare coverage. Then, It is my understanding that my wife can exhaust the remaning 18 months and she is eligible for an additonal 18 months because I will have become eligible for Medicare. This would take care of my wife until she became eligible for Medicare.
A: The covered employee that already has COBRA continuation and they become entitled to Medicare before the 18 months end, their spouse and dependents can stay on COBRA. When this happens it is called a 2nd qualifying event. The spouse or dependents will receive an additional 18 months of COBRA coverage for a total of 36 months.

This answer is INCORRECT! The IRS in 2004 ruled that a Medicare entitlement by the ex-employee during the original 18 months of continuation coverage is NOT a second event. Why don't you read the rules before you put incorrect information out to people.
