Q: I sent a check to my former employer for cobra benefits to be applied to myself, my husband and my two children. They cashed my check and I'm afraid they paid for my benefits only, keeping the difference in cash. Is there any way I can confirm the dollar amount my employer sent for cobra insurance? Can I confirm outside of my employer what the correct amount is for me and my dependents for benefits? Do I have to go through my employer for this process?
A: Your health insurance company can verify if your COBRA has been activated for your entire family or just you. Their phone number is on your ID card. Your previous employer is required under COBRA law to administer your COBRA coverage or they can hire a 3rd party administer. They have to provide you with the paperwork and process your COBRA premiums. The employer should provide you with proof of your COBRA cost. If your employer will not provide you with the information or if your family’s COBRA has not been activated, then you should report them to the US Department of Labor at 1-866-487-2365.
