Q:My divorce was final about 3 weeks ago. My ex-husband had planned on just switching to his company's insurance but his job was just terminated. If he switches to the COBRA through my company will any expenses incurred during the 3 weeks since the divorce be covered if he has always been on the plan? Is there a 60 day grace period? Thanks -
A:Your employer (assuming they have more than 20 employees) has a total of 45 days from the qualifying event to get your COBRA notification to your ex-husband. From the date that you get your notification, you have 60 days to elect coverage. Your coverage will back date so there will be no lapse, as soon as you sign up and make your first premium payment.
