Q:  If an employee reaches their Lifetime Maximum for benefits under a health plan, does that trigger a qualifying event for COBRA?

A:  Since COBRA is a continuation of an employer’s group plan, reaching the lifetime maximum does not allow the employee to keep the coverage. If the employee, their spouse or dependent children have medical conditions that caused them to reach the lifetime maximum, they maybe eligible for an insurance plan through their state.  To contact your state’s department of insurance visit www.naic.org
