Q:  I am currently on COBRA in Florida through my prior employer. We are considering moving to Sacramento CA at the end of the year. How would I go about switching my Cobra insurance to a California plan and could you tell me what the premiums are.

A:  COBRA is a continuation of your employer’s group plan.  When you move you do not lose your COBRA rights.  The cost of your COBRA should not change.  However, if you are limited to specific providers or have an HMO plan, you would not have coverage available when you move out of your current area.  You should contact your health insurance company to find out if your benefits will follow you when you move out of state.
