Q:If a terminated employee who has selected COBRA for the Dental coverage goes to a new employer who has medical and basic dental coverage can the terminated employee retain the COBRA Dental coverage for a couple of months because it covers care not covered under the new employers basic dental plan? If the new coverage has a pre-existing clause, will the two companies require a coordination of benefits?
A:An employee can stay on COBRA for up to 18 months even if they find a new job with health care benefits. You can not use COBRA as a secondary insurance. A person can not have COBRA and other insurance at the same time unless the other insurance does not offer benefits that the COBRA coverage provides.
