Q: I am trying to decide if I need Cobra coverage. I lost my job in September. I need to have a follow up mammogram. Wouldn't this mammogram be considered a "pre-existing" condition and therefore only covered by Cobra as opposed to opting for a new health plan?
A: It is your decision when deciding to take COBRA or not. Your mammogram would be considered a pre-existing condition. If you sign up for your continuing COBRA coverage through your previous employer it would cover your mammogram and any illness or injury they may uncover from the procedure.
You should consider a COBRA Alternative if you...
· cannot afford your COBRA option offered by former employer
· have few or no pre-existing conditions
· want continual coverage at a lower cost
· have had no health problems
· are healthy, have a job and your new employer does not offer a health plan.
