Q:My wife and I have lost our insurance due to my company going out of business and I cannot get through to anyone at my company. Therefore we cannot reach anyone from there to get us our Cobra option letter. We need continuous coverage as we are pregnant and cannot get any other coverage due to a preexisting condition and we do not know what to do.
A:Due to your company going out of business COBRA may not be an option to you.If the employer cancels their group health insurance policy and no longer offers group health benefits to any active employee then COBRA will not be an option for you.If you can’t get a hold of your previous employer I would suggest contacting your insurance carrier to see if it would be possible to convert your group health plan to an individual plan that would cover your wife’s pregnancy. Another option is that some states offer a continuation plan that would cover your wife’s pregnancy; you should contact them to see what options they may have for you. You can go to www.naic.org to see what is available in your state.
