Q: I have just retired from my job. My husband & I are on cobra from MY work, I can get cheaper insurance. I would like to get off Cobra and leave my husband on just for a month, until he qualifies for a private insurance. My boss says NO If I quit cobra so must he.
A: You are correct; your husband can continue the COBRA coverage even if you decide to find other coverage. The COBRA law allows you to continue your coverage but it does not require everyone to take the coverage. Your husband would go from a family or a spouse plan to an individual, his monthly rate will change but it will be the same coverage he had before. You should talk to your COBRA administrator, or who ever you make your payments to and they should be able to help you make the change.
A lot of people I talk to are interested in a more affordable option to COBRA, click here for more information.
