Q:I understand the national COBRA plans last 18 months and hat Cal-COBRA is an extension from COBRA. Is the extension for 18 months or can you extend 36 months for a total of national COBRA and Cal-Cobra of 54 months? This question is for a spouse covered under a health plan for his wife who is deceased.
A:You are correct that some states do offer a continuation of coverage once you use up your federal COBRA program. In the state of California there is a program called CAL-COBRA.This allows some individuals an 18 month extension from their federal COBRA plan. The maximum continuation of coverage under COBRA and Cal-COBRA is 36 months total. You can contact Cal-COBRA directly at 213-897-8921 or the California State Department of Insurance for more information on CAL-COBRA.
