Q: My 18 months of COBRA coverage ends 2/28/09. I just found out my employer never notified my health care provider to notify of my leaving their employ. My current employer does not offer health plan coverage. I pay my own premium. I have read that "Although COBRA sets specific time limits on coverage, there is nothing stopping the employer from extending your benefits beyond the mandated coverage period". I do not have any qualifying disability. 1. How do I go about asking my employer to extend coverage (even for six months) or until I can obtain employment that offers benefits? 2. Should I just continue to pay my monthly medical payment to my former employer?
A: An employer is only obligated to offer 18 months of COBRA. There are certain qualifying events that may allow up to 36 months. We at cobrainsurance.com provide COBRA ALTERNATIVES – Short Term Health. These plans are generally up to 70% off of the COBRA premiums. We provide coverage for any new illness or injury. We do not cover preexisting health conditions. If you are interested in a quote, please click on the link below.
