Q:  I will be moving out of state and currently have Blue cross HMO. I am 6months pregnant also. Blue cross of california is not covered in Tennessee where I am moving. Does my employeer have to give me an alternative coverage plan?

A:  Under the federal COBRA law your employer has to offer you a continuation of benefits when you lose coverage through that employer, they are required to offer you the same benefits they offer to their current employees.  Unfortunately if the only plan your company offers is a HMO, that is the plan you would be offered on COBRA.  I suggest talking to your employer/insuarnce company to see if there is any way to change the network on your insurance plan.  I would also talk to the state department of insurance in Tennessee and explain your situation, they may have an insurance option available to you.
