Q: I presently have health insurance where I work (they have 30 employees). I am thinking of retiring. After I retire I could have health insurance under my husband's plan (he owns a small business) but I would prefer to continue the health insurance that I have now with my present employer. Would I still be qualified for COBRA even if other (though less desirable) insurance were available to me? Thanks for your help.
A:Yes. If you are comfortable with the health plan and coverage you have now, you can choose to continue with that plan for up to 18 months. You would be responsible for paying 102% of the monthly costs of that group health plan. COBRA isan option for you, even if you can obtain other health insurance. You will not be eligible for COBRA if you have applied for another policy and that new policy covers your medical conditions. You would not be able to use double coverage.
