Q: I was laid off on 10/30/08 and declined Cobra due to cost of the program. I have since heard, that the cost had been cut by 60% and if I had been laid off after September 2008, I was able now to be covered up to 9 months under this new pricing. The price for my husband and I under the standard plan (which I had when employed) was $544.49 which was continuing coverage that we had. Is this still available? The reason we declined Cobra at the time of my termination was that it was too high, but with the 60% discount, we can afford that at this time. This would bring the cost of Cobra to about $218.00 per month.
A: The first step would be to contact your previous employer to see if you are still eligible for COBRA. If you are looking for information on the stimulus package and how it will affect your COBRA coverage, you should contact the Federal Department of Labor, they regulate the COBRA law. The department of labor’s phone number is 866-444-3272 or visit their website at www.dol.gov
