Q:  I am 60 years old, and my Cobra coverage from my last job will be ending June 25th. I am working on getting a part-time job with a school district, and I understand they provide full coverage for part-time employees. If, for any reason, I have to leave that position, will I again qualify for Cobra? Is there any minimum time period I have to be in that position in order to qualify? And if I do go back on COBRA, how long would it be for? I understand when you are over 60; it is for 3 or 5 years. Which one is correct? Thank you.

A:  As long as you have obtained health insurance from your employer you are eligible for the continuation coverage. So, if you have elected coverage and were making premium payments you are eligible for a continuation of that group health plan. Your age does not determine the length of your COBRA coverage.  If you terminate the job as a qualifying event, than you will have 18 months of continuation. Once you turn 65 than you are no longer eligible for COBRA, only your qualified beneficiaries will qualify.
