Q: I was employed up until December 31, 2008. At that time the warehouse I worked in closed down. Right before the closure I was forced to take several days off as they were sick days that I had accumulated. On one of those days off the employees were informed of the COBRA plan to extend our benefits with Kaiser Permenente. Since I wasn't there I did not get a full description of the COBRA plan, nor did I ask as I assumed that COBRA would be too expensive. However, I have recently been informed that I may be eligible for a substantial discount with COBRA. I called about this yesterday and was told that I need to contact my former employer for details. Unfortunately, this place is no longer in business and I don't know of anyone to contact. Can you help me? Thank you.
A: If your place of employment is no longer in business, COBRA may not be offered. If the company you previously worked for is a large corporation. You may want to try contacting the Corporation for further details. We are also a company that offers Cobra Alternatives. They are short term major medical plans that cover new illnesses or injuries. They do not cover any pre-existing conditions. The plans online are alternatives to Cobra. The main difference between this plan and Cobra is that it doesn't cover pre-existing conditions or preventative care. Short Term Health typically costs less than Cobra. They'll cover new illnesses or injuries.
