Q:  Do we need to apply for COBRA after my spouse resign from her job? Can we drop COBRA anytime if my spouse will already have her own medical insurance in place from her new employer? Can we apply for cobra for only 2months? What’s the coverage, is it the same as our previous benefits from my spouse previous employer? Are we not covered by COBRA for 60 days without a monthly fee?  Thank you.

A:  If you want to continue the same coverage you have now, yes, you will need to apply for COBRA.  Ask her HR department for a COBRA packet to fill out and apply.  The have 45 days to send it to you.  You can drop COBRA when it is no longer necessary you just have to be sure to go through the right procedure.  And yes, the coverage is exactly the same as when you were employed.  It’s just a continuation of your coverage.
