Q:  I left my previous employer and enrolled in COBRA for myself and my husband.  I now have a new job which offers health benefits to me only. Can I stop COBRA for myself, but continue it for my husband (even though I was the employee and primary subscriber on my previous insurance)?  I would prefer not to send my COBRA payments to my previous employer. Is there another address where I can direct my monthly COBRA payments?

A:  You have the right to discontinue COBRA coverage.  You also have the right to remove a person at anytime. However, you may be required to wait until open enrollment to add a person (unless it's a newborn or new spouse). You will need to contact your previous employer's plan administrator so they can adjust the premium to reflect the changes.  You are required to send your payment to your previous employer because it is a continuation of their group health policy.
