Q: Who do I contact in South Carolina if an employer has been collecting COBRA premiums on an employee when the employee was still being covered by the company insurance plan with Blue Cross/ Blue Shield? The employee received HIPPA papers confirming he has been covered by their Blue Cross/Blue Shield employer insurance through March 1, 2009. However, the employee has been making checks out to his employer for COBRA payments since last August 2008 because the employer told him was no longer covered by the company plan so he would have to send them (the employer) a check each month for COBRA which he has been doing. Please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks!
A: You are enrolled on Cobra and still sending your payments to your employer. Sometimes when you have Cobra, your employer administers your Cobra payments and sends them to the insurance company. Sometimes they hire a Cobra administer to take care of the Cobra coverage. If you do not have insurance or you feel there is something going on, you should contact your State Department of Insurance.
