Q:  If you call your insurance before you go to have any therapy or shot & they tell you still have insurance you explain to them if you don't then you will wait till the first of the year till your husbands insurance picks up. They tell you your insurance is still good then a week later you get a cobra package that states your insurance ended 3 weeks ago. Is this right? Can they do this? I feel this is just a way for them to get you so you have to sign up for cobra.

A:  If you were to sign up for Cobra, it is retroactive, therefore you have to pay for those monthly premiums if you were to have visited the doctor and need the insurance coverage.  Your previous employer has 45 days to send you the Cobra information and then you have 60 days to decide to take the coverage.  For example, you went to the doctor, let’s say everything it cost $200 dollars, you can either pay by the back payments and take the Cobra coverage or if you feel its more affordable and you have another insurance option, you could always pay your medical bill of $200 out of pocket, and take your new insurance coverage.
