Q:I have a new job but kept my children and husband on my COBRA plan for financial reasons. Now it is open enrollment time for my job and would like to add the children onto my new plan. My administrator at work said I was not allowed to add the children until COBRA has been exhausted. I work for a school system. Can you tell me if this is correct?
A:When someone is on Cobra coverage, if a group health plan were to become available they do not have to exhaust all of there Cobra eligibility. For example, if they were eligible to be on Cobra for up to 18 months there is no need to stay on it for the full 18, you can cancel your coverage at any time.
