Q: Our daughter will be graduatng from College and will come off our insurance. She has had Thyroid cancer and is on synthroid medication 200mg for life. What options should we look at for her until she has full time employment with benefits? She has no other health issues.
A: If you elect COBRA you are actually continuing the same group health insurance that you had with your past employer. So, if your medical conditions were covered under that plan they will continue to be covered under COBRA. Your daughter would be eligible for COBRA if your employer has more than 20 employees. She can have COBRA for up to 18 months. Also COBRA continuation is creditable coverage and when she is eligible for her new employers health insurance there will not be a pre-existing clause.
