Q: I live in Florida. I was laid off by my employer due to lack of work. My employer has less than 20 employees so I am only eligible for state cobra continuation coverage. The medical insurance company through my employer is BlueCross /BlueShield. The plan I elected was a PPO. Am I eligible for the same cobra continuation coverage with BlueCross/BlueShield if I move to another state? I have contacted BlueCross/BlueShield & Ceridian who handles the cobra state continuation contract for the state of Florida. Neither one could give me an answer even after talking to their supervisors. I got the same answer from my employer.
A: If you move to another state your PPO doctors and offices may be scarce, due to the fact you are out of your networks area. You can try looking into where the providers would be in your new area. If you are having issues with handling your coverage and verify your information, I would recommend contacting the your State Department of Insurance directly to figure your dilemma out.
