Q:  My Cobra expires 5/31/09. I am Medicare Eligible but have never signed up for part B due to Group Insurance. I elected Cobra when I retired but it expires on the date above. Medicare says that I am a late entrant and will not be eligible for part B until July 1,2009. If my cobra expires it seems like that would be a qualifying event that would entitle me to Part B as of 6/01/2009. What are my rights?

A:  If someone waits to enroll in Medicare Part B until after COBRA ends, the individual will only be able to enroll in Part B during the general enrollment period and coverage will not begin until July.  There is no special enrollment period when COBRA coverage ends.
