Q:  I separated from my husband on 10/29/07. My divorce was final on 10/10/08. I was a housewife and had not worked for 8 years. I am currently still trying to find employment. While separated and waiting for the divorce my then husband left his employer on 6/18/08. I elected cobra and starting paying cobra for my two sons and myself. My 18 months of cobra ends on 12/19/08. Since the separation occurred during his employment and my divorce occurred during my Cobra do I qualify for an additional 18 months of Cobra after 12/19/08?

A:  Divorce is a “qualifying event” that allows for qualified beneficiaries to continue coverage for a maximum period of 36 months.  For specific details regarding your election, you would need to contact the COBRA administrator.
