Q:I was on long term disability for two yrs which ended the end of April 2009 I had previously worked for approx 15 yrs at my job as a correction officer and because of the standard of fitness test being increased I incurred some medical problems. I now must pay cobra to keep insurance for my husband and I at a cost of approx $670.00 per month until I can find another job I was told I do not qualify for unemployment insurance so this cobra payment is going to be a very big burden and I wont be able to pay for more than one or two months at this cost. Will I qualify for this cobra discount if so what do I need to do?
A:To be eligible for the reduction in your premium, you would have to have been involuntarily terminated as well as not be eligible for Medicare or your spouses health benefits. You should be given a second enrollment period to apply for this. But to find out if you are going to be eligible for a second enrollment you are going to need to contact your previous employer for that information.
