Q: I was laid-off from my job as of 05/08/09, and I was given a 2009 COBRA Premium list, with a column for each the per month premium and subsidy. I'm trying to understand what I'll be expected to pay. What about the new law that went into effect on Feb. 17, 2009 where my premium is not to exceed 35% of the cost? Doesn't it automatically qualify me for the COBRA subsidy under this law? Am I guaranteed that when I receive my COBRA enrollment package the 35% is what I'll be expected to pay? Please help.
A: If you have received information on your Cobra coverage and it includes the subsidy aka the reduction in cost, then you are eligible for the reduced premium and in that packet you received it should state what your monthly premiums are going to be with the reduction. You must meet the requirements to have your Cobra coverage subject to the reduction in your premiums, if your employer whom supplied you with the information in regards to that coverage said you are eligible for the subsidy, then you must meet the requirements necessary. If you have any further questions in regards to your Cobra coverage you are going to need to talk with your previous employer, they are who handles all of your Cobra coverage benefits.
