Q:  I was recently laid off from work and was offered the cobra insurance from my employer. It says my monthly payment will be $600 a month. How do I know if the government will pay 65% of that? Is there a number I can call to talk to someone who can answer my questions before I sign anything?

A:  If you are unaware if your Cobra’s premium has been subject to the reduction, you are going to need to contact either your Cobra administrator and that phone number may be on some of the paperwork you have, or your previous employer.  Your previous employer is the one who sent you that information; they should be able to let you know if your coverage is subject to the reduction or if the $600 is the reduced cost.  Try either the HR department of your previous employer or ask them who you can contact, often times their 3rd party administrator who handles their Cobra coverage.
