Q:  I was let go from my 21 year job, April 17, 2009. When does my Cobra option start? I have paperwork that has ended my health coverage, but no one has offered me Cobra coverage. Also is there a time limit as to when my old employer has to send me paperwork to offer me Cobra?

A:  To apply for Cobra you are going to do so through your previous employer.  They are actually the ones as well that are going to be sending you information on how to enroll with Cobra.  However, to be eligible for Cobra, within the last year your company needs to have employed more than 20 people and still have a group health plan in force today.  By law, after you’ve lost your job, your previous employer has 45 days to send you that information.  If you opt for the Cobra coverage, it does go retro-active to your last day of benefits.
