Q:I have looked over Cobra’s alternative plans for myself and they seem worthwhile, but I absolutely need spouse coverage and don't see any. What can I do??
A:The alternative plans are not going to be the same coverage you had when you were working. They are totally different plans; anyone can sign up for them. There is no classification as to spousal coverage. The alternative plans, for short term, do not cover pre-existing conditions. They would cover all new illness and all new injury. If one of you has a pre-existing condition, Cobra would be your best option and you would need to apply for that through your previous employer.
