Q: If I elect to continue my health care coverage through a cobra plan, and I am hired by a company that offers a health insurance plan, may I compare costs and continue with the cobra coverage if it is more cost effective for me? Or am I automatically off the cobra option once I accept employment that offers a plan (or not). What if the new company only offers coverage for me (as employee) and not for my family members?
A: If you opt for Cobra coverage, and then get a job that offers benefits but you feel that you would prefer to stay with Cobra, you can do so. As well as you said, if you want to keep only certain people on Cobra and the others on your new insurance. The only thing is, if your Cobra is subject to the reduction and you get a job with benefits, your Cobra is no longer subject to the reduction. You need to report that to your Cobra administrator there are penalties if you do not report that you are on Cobra and you have a new job that offers benefits.
