Q:  Hello, I resigned from my previous position, and my last official day as an employee was April 30th, 2009. I was not given any information about Cobra insurance. I recently spoke to a former employee and was told I had an option to continue insurance coverage through Cobra. Is that still a possibility? How do I go about applying through my former employer? Or, is it too late? Is this employer mandated to provide this information to employees upon resignation? I have not found another job yet and am covered by no other insurance at this time. I am not eligible to apply for Cobra's alternative plans because I do have a few pre-existing conditions. Thanks

A:  When you left your previous job, and you had benefits through them when you working and the company has more than 20 employees Cobra should have been an option to you.  To find out if it is still possible to opt for the Cobra coverage you need to speak with your previous employers HR department or benefits department.  Your Cobra coverage comes from them, you are continuing on their group health plan on Cobra.  When you left your job, by law if Cobra is an option, your previous company has 45 days to inform you or supply you with the information on how to apply.

As far as the Cobra alternatives go, if you have a pre-existing condition, you may still be eligible but the conditions would not be covered.  The short term plans would cover all new illness and all new injury.  If you would be interested in generating a quote simply click the following link:  Short Term Medical Insurance
