Q: I had a forced resignation from my school district in Dec. 08. I received COBRA with Keystone Blue HMO. They say that they can't continue servicing me when I move to North Carolina in August. The Pittsburgh City School District say they can't and don't have to provide me with COBRA once I moved. I received a PA Disability pension and Social Security /Disability. My question is "Isn't the school district still obligated to provide me with a health insurance plan at about the same cost. Also, can this policy be extended to 29 months because of my disability? Thank you
A: Due to the fact that it sounds pretty technical as far as the move and if they need to provide you coverage, I would recommend you visit the department of labors website. They oversee the Cobra law, the website is www.dol.gov
It is a possibility, Cobra is a continuation of the same exact coverage you had when you were working. If your providers or your network for your insurance is in your PA it is possible that your coverage won’t cover you in NC. If you have question as to if your coverage will extend to NC I would talk to your insurance carrier to verify benefits and coverage as well as you can try speaking with your Cobra administrator if you are not sure who that is ask your previous employer.
