Q: I plan on quitting the job in 2 weeks and expecting a baby in 2 weeks as well. I'll be covered by current insurance for next 2 weeks, will I be eligible to get Cobra insurance under given circumstances? If it is offered, when will coverage actually start i.e. will it start from next day after my last day at work? Is there lot of paper work or time lapse involved in getting Cobra Insurance?
A: If you have health insurance at your current employer, when you leave you should be able to get Cobra, if your company has more than 20 employees than Cobra should be an option. By law your company has 45 days to send you that information on how to apply and the coverage when you take it will go retro-active to your last day of benefits. Therefore there will be no lapse in coverage, due to fact that you are pregnant I would talk to your employer directly to see if there is anything they can do to make sure they get you the information as soon as they can, just to ease your mind so you know that you are eligible and able to get Cobra. My recommendation is to talk with your HR department and ask that you are supplied with a Cobra packet to enroll in the coverage.
