Q:  A man and his wife elects Cobra coverage upon his employment termination. The Cobra term is 18 months. During the 15th month of Cobra coverage, he becomes eligible, and enrolls with Medicare. How does this effect the Cobra coverage for the wife? Is she eligilble for 36 months from the date of the qualifying event?

A: The maximum amount of time a person can continue on COBRA is 36 months. When he becomes eligible for Medicare (this would be a secondary qualifying event) she can continue for an additional 18 months. The start of the second 18 months begins when the initial 18 months end.
