Q:  I am currently on pregnancy disability leave through my employer, however my current insurance coverage will end on 10/31. I am due to have my baby in mid November and will definitely be switching over to the Cobra coverage under the same plan I have now. Since I am going to be in the hospital delivering so soon after the change from my employer to Cobra, I wanted to know what I can do to expedite the change or how fast it can be taken care of so that the hospital sees that I do in fact have coverage and there were no gaps, etc.

A:  We are a provider of Cobra information and Alternative Solutions.   We are not affiliated with Cobra.  Cobra is NOT a company, but a federal law that allows you to continue on the previous employer’s group health insurance plan.   If you need to elect Cobra or are finding out more information regarding your Cobra Benefits, you must contact your employer.  They send out a packet for you to continue (or extend) your current health coverage.

There will be NO lapse in your coverage if you elect Cobra with your past employer. Cobra goes back retro-active once you sign up within the time frame listed in the packet.  It WILL cover all pre-existing conditions since it is the same health plan you had.  If you are pregnant or are seeking treatment for any type of health conditions, you really should consider continuing on Cobra.  This will be your only option to have coverage for any pre-existing condition.   To speed up the process you would need to speak with your past employer to see if there is anyway they can get you the Cobra packet in a more timely manner so you don’t have to worry about it when you are ready to deliver.
