Q:If a person has come to the end of the nine month period of 65% insurance premium paid by the government for his or her COBRA premium, does this become a qualifying event for that person's spouse as far as the ability to place him or her on the spouse's insurance at a time that is not open enrollment?
A:With Cobra, if the spouse was never on the insurance while you were employed; to my understanding they cannot get Cobra coverage.Cobra is a continuation of the same insurance, therefore if they weren’t on the insurance while you were working, I don’t think they qualify for the coverage. You can always speak with your past employer or your Cobra administrator but I don’t believe he can get on the insurance.
