Q: My job was terminated in June of 2007. I was never offered a cobra packet but paid my insurance premiums to my employer. I quit paying after 18 months because I thought my coverage should have ended. I never received an exit form either which I didn't realize I was supposed to receive. I still am getting insurance coverage. I also received the new insurance card they send out every year. Does that mean I was never put on cobra? What are my legal rights as I have pre-existing conditions and have been turned down by other insurance companies?
A: There sounds like there is some confusion in your coverage, you need to contact your past employer to verify what is going on with your coverage. If you are still on the group health plan or if you are on or are eligible for Cobra. I am unsure if the way you make it sound if the past employer has kept you on the group plan or what exactly they are doing in regards to your coverage. We are a provider of Cobra information and Alternative Solutions. We are not affiliated with Cobra. Cobra is NOT a company, but a federal law that allows you to continue on the previous employer’s group health insurance plan. If you need to elect Cobra or are finding out more information regarding your Cobra Benefits, you must contact your employer. They send out a packet for you to continue (or extend) your current health coverage.
