Q:  My husband lost his job on 9/11/09, I know that we are under Cobra. I'm starting a new job on 10/1/09 and I can get insurance benefits from my new employer, but the rate is so high for my family I can not afford them. My pay check would be in the minus and I would owe my employer money. Can we stay on Cobra or are we forced to take my plan because insurance is offered to us?

A:  You can still continue your benefits through Cobra, however, if your Cobra is more affordable because you are receiving the reduction in the cost of the premiums, the stimulus package that would no longer apply unfortunately.  If that is the case, you can continue your Cobra benefits but at the full price, without the reduction.  If you are already on Cobra, the cost is in full you are not receiving the reduction but is still more affordable than your new employees  you can definitely keep your Cobra until your 18 months is up.
