Q:I took early retirement in May 2008 and have been paying for cobra for 18 months. The 18 months is over the end of this month and I have 11 more months before I am 65 and qualify for Medicare, but my wife is 3 years younger. Is there anyway to continue her cobra?
A:You would need to speak to your Cobra administrator and see if you have a qualifying event for her and you can see if she is eligible for an extension. You can also go to www.dol.gov/COBRA to see exactly what the Cobra law allows for extensions. It may be that you have to find your own individual coverage for your wife until she is able to get on Medicare also.
