Q: Hi ~ Can you tell me if there is a Cobra plan for spouses only? We are going to be loosing insurance for myself through my husbands work and need to know if there is a plan that would cover me only, in-case my husbands new job did offer to cover him. As far as we know his new job doesn't cover spouses. Also, could we add a dependent (child) whom was not current under his plan at work onto a cobra plan with me?
A: With Cobra, its offered to whomever was on the plan while the individual was working. Therefore when he loses his job and Cobra is offered to him, you can take the coverage for just yourself, you husband doesn’t have to take the coverage. But you cannot add your child to the plan because he was never under your husbands group health plan.
