Q: In April, 2010, I will be eligible for COBRA through my husband's union. Due to my cancer (and necessary access to cancer-care providers), I was allowed to have a plan which is SUPPLEMENTAL to my primary Medicare (even though other retirees were transferred into a Medicare Advantage plan). My question is: when I am eligible for COBRA, will I be allowed to stay with this supplementary coverage or will I be forced into a Medicare Advantage because that is what is offered to others in the same situation?
A: Cobra is a continuation of the same insurance you had through a past employer, but due to your circumstances I don’t know exactly what your best option is. I don’t know if Cobra will be available to you because you can get Medicare or what the best coverage for you would be, I would recommend talking to the Department of Labor to see if Cobra is going to be an option to you at 866-444-3272 as well as speak with Medicare to see what is going to happen to your coverage.
